If you’re a parent, the phrase “school fundraiser” probably brings a few specific images to mind: a heavy box of catalogs dropped on your kitchen counter, the awkwardness of asking coworkers to buy frozen pizza, and the pressure of meeting a sales goal. For decades, we’ve been told this is just “how it’s done.” You put in weeks of effort, track orders on a complicated spreadsheet, and in the end, you hope a meaningful amount of the money actually makes it to the programs your kids love.

We get it. It can be exhausting. You want to support your child’s school, but the process often feels like a part-time job you never signed up for. What if there was a way to a make a bigger impact with much less effort? A way that feels less like selling and more like celebrating your community? There is, and it’s beautifully simple.

From Selling Products to Sharing a Story

Shareathon was created with a simple idea: fundraising should be about connection, not transaction. Instead of asking you to become a salesperson for candy bars or wrapping paper, we invite you to simply be a sharer.

What does that mean? It means you don’t have to handle a single product, collect any cash, or manage an inventory. Your role is simply to share a message about your school’s fundraising campaign with the people in your life who already care about your child and your community—grandparents, aunts, uncles, family friends, and neighbors.

You share a unique link through text, email, or social media. That’s it. Your community can then choose to contribute directly to the school. There’s no pressure, no inventory to track, and no awkward follow-ups about who still needs to pick up their cookie dough. It’s a modern approach that fits into your busy life, allowing you to participate in a meaningful way with just a few clicks on your phone.

This shift from selling to sharing honors your time and your relationships. It focuses everyone’s energy on supporting the school’s mission, whether that’s funding a new playground, new technology for the classrooms, or an amazing field trip.

Where Does the Money Actually Go?

This is the question every parent should ask of any fundraiser. You deserve to know how much of the money raised from your efforts actually benefits the students. With traditional product fundraisers, it’s common for the fundraising company to take a large portion of the sales—often 40-50%, or even more. That means for every $20 item you sell, the school might only see $10.

We believe in a more generous and transparent approach. With a Shareathon campaign, a full 60% of every dollar contributed goes directly to your school or organization.

Here’s how a typical Open Share campaign works:

  • 60% goes straight to the school. This is the largest portion, and it goes right where it’s needed most.
  • 20% goes to the sharer. We believe in thanking you for your help. When someone contributes through your unique link, you receive a portion as a thank you. Many parents choose to donate this right back to the school, but it’s yours to keep. You made the connection happen!
  • 20% goes to Shareathon. This portion helps us keep the platform running, provide amazing support for our schools, and continue building tools that make fundraising easier for everyone.

We lead with transparency because we want you to feel confident and excited about participating. When you share a campaign, you know that the majority of the funds are making a direct impact on your child's education and experience.

Let's See It in Action: A Simple Example

Numbers can help make the difference clear. Let’s imagine a typical 4th-grade class of 25 students needs to raise funds for a special science camp.

The Old Way (Product Sales): The goal is to have each of the 25 students sell 10 tubs of popcorn at $20 each. This requires parents to ask friends and family to buy $200 worth of popcorn per student. If everyone participates, the class sells $5,000 worth of product. If the school gets a 50% split, they raise $2,500 for their trip. But this comes after weeks of parents collecting orders, handling money, and then distributing dozens of popcorn tubs. It’s a huge logistical effort for every family.

The Shareathon Way (Sharing): Instead of selling, each of the 25 parents shares the school’s campaign link with 10 close friends and family members. That’s 250 invitations sent out in a matter of minutes.

Let’s say just 40 of those 250 people decide to contribute, giving an average of $50 each. They’re happy to support the students without having to buy something they may not need.

  • Total Raised: 40 supporters x $50 = $2,000
  • The School Gets (60%): $2,000 x 0.60 = $1,200
  • The Sharers Get (20%): $2,000 x 0.20 = $400 (This is shared among the parents whose contacts gave.)

At first glance, it might seem like the old way raised more, but look closer. The Shareathon way raised a significant amount of money with a fraction of the time and no stress. There was no selling, no product delivery, and no collecting payments. And parents who helped share the message even got a little something back as a thank you. The school can run this campaign multiple times a year with ease, creating a steady stream of support without burning out its parent volunteers.
